 OFA

  • What is OFA?

    • OFA stands for the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals. It is a nonprofit organization that helps improve the health and well-being of animals through genetic research and health screening. For dog owners and breeders, the OFA is best known for providing certifications on important health tests, such as hips, elbows, heart, eyes, thyroid, and more.

    Why Breeders Use OFA

    • Protects future generations – By screening for inherited conditions, breeders can reduce the chance of passing on genetic health problems.

    • Provides peace of mind – Families adopting a puppy know the parents have been checked for common health risks.

    • Encourages transparency – Results are stored in an open database so anyone can look up the health history of a dog’s lineage.

    • Supports better breeding decisions – OFA results help breeders match dogs in ways that strengthen the health of the breed.

    Why It Matters for You

    • When you see an OFA certification, it means that the dog has been evaluated by a licensed veterinarian and the results have been officially recorded. This adds confidence that your puppy is coming from lines that have been thoughtfully bred for both temperament and long-term health.
